Everybody knows how important water is to your body. We all survive on water, shall it be for our daily needs, when trekking, when working out, hiking etc..
Nowadays you have the choice to use disposable plastic bottles, not environmental friendly at all, or to use reusable bottles for the sake of keeping our plastic waste to the minimum.. but here again... a reusable bottle is ok, but needs to be constantly cleaned to avoid bacteria farming, that translates in bad taste, stinky water, multiplication of germs and maybe viruses that could make you sick.
The question we ask ourselves then are:
How to clean plastic water bottles ?
How to clean molds from water bottles?
What about cleaning stainless steel water bottles ?
How to clean a water bottle without a brush ?
So let's discuss water bottle hygiene here and see the reality and the solutions.
Below are some interesting sources on the topic that approach the matter from different angles:An article from Treadmill Reviews conducted tests on 12 bottles. Stay put, "Based on the 12 water bottles we tested, we found that reusable drinking containers may be crawling with an alarming number of viable bacteria cells: more than 300,000 colony-forming units per square centimeter (CFU/sq cm)."
What does it exactly mean ? "To put it bluntly, drinking from the average refillable bottle can be many times worse than licking your dog’s toy."
However, in spite of what some viral post showcasing horrible pictures would try to make you believe, those germs, bacteria, are invisible to human eye, so you don't even know when you are ingesting them.
We won't go through all the appetizing details stated in this article but you can checkout the above link for more details.
Runners World addresses the issue in an article too, metionning a study where "researchers asked 30 gym members to hand over their shaker bottles for testing, and compared the results to that of 30, unused (contaminant-free) ones. They discovered bacteria contamination in 83 percent of the used plastic bottles. Most prevalent were Staphylococcus aureus (found in 27 percent of the bottles) and E. coli (found in 17 percent)."
Accuweather Website also raises the issue in an article, asking the question "Is your water bottle the perfect host for germs?" Well here are several facts, if you don't clean your bottle on a daily basis, Bacteria spread, and it could make you sick. Here again is mentioned that unwashed bottles could be "dirtier than dog bowls and kitchen sinks" Now it is also assumed that bacteria flourishing is initiated by your interaction with the bottle.. Those bacteria are "the same ones you'll find on your hands or in your mouth," which reminds us pretty much about the similar case we discussed regarding bacteria loaded Cell Phones .Chuck Gerba, professor of microbiology and environmental sciences at the University of Arizona, says that most contamination cases appear in sports bottles that require the use of a finger to open and close the bottle.
You usually tend to get fecal bacteria by contaminating the push button with your fingers. According to Gerba, it may be best to stay away from these kinds of bottles.
This kind of scary information makes you think twice before sticking to reusable water bottles.. Although this is a must to keep plastic waste low and comply with our ever increasing environmental responsibility and common sense.
Other reviews on websites such as Mashable SEA draw the same conclusions.
